Kellyho výrok rozpoutal na internetu diskuzní válku

Před dvěma týdny se 26letý bodyboarder stal obětí útoku žraloka na ostrově Reunion. Do černých tabulek ostrova se tato tragédie zapsala jako celkově 20. útok (z toho 8. smrtelný) od roku 2011! Nejprve si však připomeňme, jak to v médiích se žraloky chodí. Problémem není číslo útoků, které je celosvětově od roku 2007 "pouhých" 766, ale jejich mediální pokrytí. Každý z těchto útoků se okamžitě dostane na internet. Přitom šance, že vás napadne žralok, je mnohem menší, než že na vás např. spadne kokos z palmy, nebo že vás někdo postřelí.

Takže v čem je ten háček, který vytočil dokonce Kellyho Slatera? Logicky když si porovnáte poměr výskytu útoků po celém světě a na maličkém ostrově jako je Reunion, vznikne obrovská nerovnováha. Na to Kelly upozornil v komentáři u příspěvku Jeremyho Florese, kde řekl, že by se měl počet žraloků v této oblasti zredukovat (tzv. cullingem = zabíjením). Čímž rozzuřil spoustu jeho dosavadních fanoušků a zastánců. Kelly je totiž známých ochráncem rovnováhy obyvatelů oceánu a tím i samozřejmě žraloků. V roce 2014 dokonce takto reagoval na culling v Austrálii v rozhovoru pro Perth Now:
“I think it’s kind of silly, it’s like we’ve lost all feeling for other creatures on some level and I think that’s kind of sad. If I got eaten by a shark, I’d be honored.”
Na Instagramu se pak strhla doslova válka komentářů, na jedné straně příspěvky zastánců, na druhé straně útoky od odpůrců:

Postavení v této záležitosti pak Kelly komentoval pro Surfline:
“Reunion's situation is unprecedented, there's no natural reason that many people should be getting attacked in such a small area. Shark finning is a separate issue which I'm totally against. Sharks are a healthy part of any ocean and when not interfered with the ocean creates a good balance. People should feel safe in most situations to swim and surf but Reunion obviously has an out of control situation that we don't totally understand. It needs addressing or more people are going to die and their lives are more important to me than the bull sharks in the area.” 

Proti Kellyho názoru se postavil například také surfař a "žraločí advokát", který přežil útok žraloka a přišel o nohu - Mike Coots. 
“First and foremost, Jeremy and Kelly are both friends of mine and I respect their opinions and their passion about public safety on Reunion Island,” řekl Coots. “That being said, I think culling a species is fundamentally wrong. Science has shown that it doesn’t work. It actually can make the situation worse. I think we need to focus more on coexistence between humans and sharks. And in order to coexist, that means we don’t kill something we perceive as a threat. It’s sort of a barbaric, knee-​jerk reaction. The best approach would be to use science and technology to try and mitigate these problems, it’s not a fast solution. And I know the politicians are under pressure to do something immediately. But I absolutely think culling is not the answer. I wish there was an answer, but I know culling is not. History has shown that any time we disrupt the balance of a marine ecosystem, it doesn’t work in our favor.” 

S Kellym nadruhou stranu souhlasil jak Jeremy, tak i např. Michel Bourez.

“What would you do if going into the sea just 2 metres from shore put your life in danger?” napsal Bourez na Facebook. “Nobody wants to kill sharks, they are in their element. But right now, the situation is getting out of control. Bull shark populations are out of their natural balance and still rising. Bull sharks don’t attack to ‘taste’ like the Great White or the Tiger… they attack to kill whether the prey is edible or not… Don’t be too quick too judge what Kelly Slater and Jeremy Flores have said.”

Jeremy Flores prohlásil: “For those who criticized Kelly Slater’s comment, I just want to say none of you have ever done as much as him for the protection of the environment. Can you stop 1 minute and think why would he position himself on such delicate subject? Instead of judging, please try to at least understand what is going on in Réunion island. It’s too easy to judge from far away without even knowing the nightmare that is happening here. It’s like nowhere else in the world, the numbers of attacks comparing to how many people go in the ocean is unbelievable. Nobody is talking about erasing the sharks. We are talking about regulating a non-​protected shark, the bullshark, who happens to kill everything including many other species of sharks, turtles etc… when it gets too close to our shoreline.”
